A Case Study of How Rowlinson Packaging Helped a
World Leading Automotive Company Improve its CKD Operation
When we were approached by a large automotive company to look at their CKD operation, they wanted us to analyse their current systems, processes and packaging units to see if we could make improvements in not only the packaging itself, but also the cost per item and the amount they could fit into a 40 sea container.
We started by looking at two of their components, and the packaging they used, and this was their current system.

Firstly, we concentrated on the packaging itself, and how we could reduce the cost of each item, without compromising quality and safety, and then moved on to look at how to minimise the space they took up in a sea container.
The result of this exercise was improvements all round and the table below shows what we were able to do for their CKD operation on just two parts.

As you can see; with our new packaging design we were able to pinpont how we could help their business achieve a:
- 10-20% saving on the packaging purchase price per case
- 25-40% improvement on the container utilisation
Looked at those figures over a year, assuming just one sea container a month, our new packaging would provide:
- An increased delivery of 6,480 parts per year
(5184 Pillar B and 1296 Roof skin)
- A total saving of 27,540 for the year
(9720 Pillar B and 17820 Roof skin)
As you can see, by looking at just two parts, we were able to make a significant difference to both the cost of the packaging and the amount shipped per container.
