Why Buy Traditional Cases When You Can Save Money
with a Wirebound Container™?
Packaging tends to be the last item companies think about when they plan a production run. All too often companies take the first solution that is offered them, as it solves the immediate problem, but never really consider the effectiveness of their decision at the time or later on.
That's why, at Rowlinson Packaging we like to ask you questions… Why? What? How? How many? And Where? Only then do we really start to understand your true requirements.
The Wirebound Container is a very unique beast in the packaging world and you may never have seen one before.
The essential element is that we stitch wire into timber to make the sides and ends (we call this the wrap) of the case. The wire adds so much strength that we can then reduce the material content to achieve the same strength as a traditional case. Reducing the material content reduces the price you pay – it’s that simple.
Accepting that you have probably never seen a Wirebound Container before and that you use more than 100 cases per Month. The two golden rules are:
- We can make it to any size, out of any material or mix of materials, to carry any load you can produce.
- We WILL save you money
Quite often we visit clients and the warehouse may be stuffed full of packaging or packaging outside in the elements in the yard. We can understand why this occurs, but it doesn’t have to.
The Wirebound Container or the Plywood Metal Edge case are stored and delivered flat packed. Both are very quick and easy to assembly. Simply by changing the style of case used you may save valuable space in your factory.
One thing you will save - is money. You will probably also cut down on packing times as well, and this is a saving very few companies really attribute much value to. However, we believe it is significant saving which is illustrated in our Case Study below.
So to the detail, what do you want?
- You want a good price.
Who doesn’t! We have four machines each of which has the capacity to manufacture 1,500 Wirebound Containers™ per shift. Our machines give us the opportunity to not only reduce material costs but also labour costs.
This gives you the great price you are looking for.
- How heavy is your load?
We have tested our cases in independent Packaging Test Laboratories and they have reached over 8,000Kg in compression. They can therefore be stacked as high as you want without racking.
- How do you pack into your cases?
Wirebound Containers™ can be manufactured so that you can have one or two sides open while packing, we can even produce drop fronts – your choice. When finished you quickly close the case and dispatch.
- Open Boarded or Close Boarded?
If we can staple a material we can put it in a Wirebound. Your Wirebound Containers™ are specifically designed and tailored to your requirements and needs.
However you intend to ship, whether by air, sea, rail or road during the design process everything will be taken into account to give you the most cost and resource effective packaging solution possible.
- You want us to hold stock for you.
We hold stock for nearly all of our customers – at no cost. Our factory has 100,000ft² of storage space for finished goods. Our storage space alone is larger than any of our competitor’s whole factories.

Wirebound Containers™ - A case study
A UK telecommunications manufacturer that air freights its products worldwide to the likes of Ericsson and Nokia asked us to review the packaging they used. They gave us the following very simple design brief.
Reduce airfreight costs by:
- Reducing the pack weight
- Reducing the m³ of the pack
The solution
As the volumes required were high, the Wirebound Container™ was a natural place to begin. From there we looked at the allowed contact points - most of the surfaces were ‘No contact areas’ everything else was ignored. This in effect gave us our starting point to design a brand new innovative solution.
The outcome was a slatted design with internal bracing bars, as seen in the picture.
The hard facts:
Design brief achieved:
- 41% lighter than the old packaging.
- 5% smaller than the old packaging.
They also benefited from:
- 9% cheaper than the old pack
- 400% decrease in assembly times compared to the old design.
- Consistent manufacturing quality
- Stockholding facility resulting in 100% delivered on time
By designing a solution that reduced the weight and volume, the process itself was also streamlined resulting in not just the two original objectives being met, but four major key benefits plus a further two benefits that freed up their staff for other tasks.
The savings in reduced airfreight alone gave them an annual cost reduction of several £000,000’s and their volumes also increased fourfold.
Had they still been using a traditional case, they could not have increased by this volume with their current facilities and labour.
So, if you use 100 or more cases per month contact us, and we WILL save you money.
